SAD NEWS: FIVE STUDENTS KILLED IN OGUN AUTO ACCIDENT

Tragedy struck in Abeokuta,the Ogun state capital Friday when no fewer than five students of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, were crushed to death by a tipper.

The incident, which occurred about 5:30 pm, caused pandemonium following the protest by students of the institution who trooped to the road and set ablaze no less than four trucks.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the truck, loaded with granite, rammed into a taxi conveying the students and killed them on the spot.

The development prompted their colleagues to barricade the Abeokuta-Odeda-Ibadan road which is opposite their campus with bonfire.

All travelers plying the road were trapped in the traffic snarl on the highway,making it difficult for motorists and commuters to proceed to their respective destinations for more than one hour.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, said some miscreants hijacked the students’ protest.

Adejobi,however said that only two students have been confirmed dead,saying there were conflicting reports on the numberof victims involved in the accident.

He said the police had to disperse the protesters when their protest was spiralling out of control.

Adejobi added that the Police Commissioner, Ikemefuna Okoye, attempted to calm the protesters who, however, defied all entreaties.

He said, “The protest was hijacked by miscreants; it was not just a student protest again. The CP tried to address the protesters but they went on the rampage.

The police had to dislodge them with tear gas.

”Most of the students retreated when the management tried to address them but some hoodlums who hijacked the protest continued, threatening to burn all the tippers at Asero motor park.

When Saturday Vanguard visited the scene,Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and mobile policemen were seen at the hot point.

After the fast on that day, we had prayers and later in the week, he asked me to see him. When I met him, he told me that in order for my curse to be broken, I needed to offer a sacrifice to God. He asked me what I valued most. I told him it was my salary.

I agreed to offer a sacrifice in form of money (salary). He told me that once I was ready with that money, I should contact him so that he could give me the guidelines on how the sacrifice was to be offered because sacrifices are not offered anyhow.

When I got the money, I sent a message to him. He asked me to go to his house where he gave me some scriptures and instructions. The instructions were that between 11:30pm and 12am, I should take off all my clothes and be uncloth (alone in my bedroom.

According to him, God does not delight in nakedness so he will give me what I ask for from Him, get the money and put it in my hands and sing some worship songs and later pray with the money in my hands and then take the money to church the following day.

I agreed to do this, but when I reached home I started feeling undecided of what to do. Something within me told me that no one in the Bible had ever given a sacrifice to God whilst uncloth. The whole thing became confusing and in the end, I just started crying because I was filled with fear and confusion.

I ended up not doing it. I told myself that I was not going to do something which I did not fully understand. The following day, the pastor asked me if I had done what I was told to do, I told him that I had not done so. He said I was too weak in faith by allowing myself to be succumbed to the devil.

I asked him if I could just pray with the sacrifice in one of the nights when we have an overnight services at church. He said no. He claimed that the sacrifice has to be prayed for alone in my bedroom. I started asking friends, but I got different views.

Some were saying it was a strange thing, others said I should go ahead with it. My humble request from all mondaylites readers is to know what you think?

1,277 NYSC MEMBERS RELOCATE FROM KANO STATE

A total of 1,277 of the 2,150 corps members posted to Kano State for the 2012‘Batch B service year have so far sought for redeployment to other states.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Bashir Yakasai, disclosed this in an interview in Kano on Monday.

He said that of those, who sought redeployment, 1,108 were posted to other states on health grounds and for security reasons, while the remaining 169 were re-deployed on marital ground.

He, however, said that the state NYSC had also received more than 50 corps members re-deployed from other states to Kano. On the issue of rejection, the coordinator said that the number so far rejected by employers was negligible considering the number of corps members, who relocated to other states.

“With the population of Kano, the remaining 873 corps members are grossly inadequate to cater for the state,” he said.

The coordinator, however, assured the corps members serving in the state of adequate security during their one year stay in the state.

Yakasai commended the state government for giving support to the scheme andcalled on individuals and corporate organisations to contribute towards the success of the scheme in the state.

Then the little boy turned to me and asked:''Uncle, are you sure I don't have enough money?''

I counted his cash and replied:''You know that you don't have enough money to buy the doll, my dear.

''The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand.

Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to?

He repile, 'It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much.

I wanted to Give her for her BIRTHDAY.

I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.

'His eyes were so sad while saying this.'My Sister has gone to be with God.. Daddy said that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister...

The little boy said:'Thank you God for giving me enough money!'

Then he looked at me and added,'I asked last night before I went to sleep, for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give It to my sister.

He heard me!'''I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much.

But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose My mommy loves white roses.'

I finished my shopping in a totally differen t state from when I started. I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind.

Then I remembered a local news paper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl.

The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state.

The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life- sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma.

Was this the family of the little boy?

Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the news paper that the young woman had passed away..

I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was exposed for people to see and make last wishes before her burial.

She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest.

I left the place, teary- eyed, feeling that my life had been changed forever...

The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still to this day, hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.

Whoa! So pathetic.

GHANA'S PRESIDENT ATTA MILLS DIED OF THROAT CANCER

ACCRA, (Reuters) - Ghana's President John Atta Mills has died unexpectedly, a presidential statement said, and an aide said his death occurred on Tuesday after he took ill on Monday night.

The death of the president of the world's No. 2 cocoa grower comes months before Mills was due to stand for re-election at the helm of the West African country that posted double-digit growth in 2011 and has been praised forits strong democracy in a turbulent region.

"It is with a heavy heart...that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," a statement sent to Reuters by the president's office said.

It said that Mills, 68, died a few hours after being taken ill but no further details were given.

A presidential aide, who asked not to benamed, said the president had complained of pains on Monday evening and died early on Tuesday afternoon when his condition got worsened.

Mills, who oversaw the start of oil production in Ghana, returned from medical checks in the United States several weeks ago.

The police in Calabar, Cross River State, have arrested a nurse, Dorothy Hayford Nkanu, who allegedly poured acid on her lover, Edmund Educhukwu(pictured above) on suspicion that he was dating another lady.

Neighbours later rushed Edmund to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, where doctors have been battling to save his badly damaged face and left eye.

The right eye was damaged beyond redemption.

Narrating his ordeal at the Intensive CareUnit of the UCTH, thefinal year student of Education Technology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Calabar said he and Dorothy have been lovers for some years and that they spent the night before the day of the attack together.

“We even had passionate sex that night. It was in the morning that she did this to me without any fight”.

On what may have prompted the lady to inflict such damage on his body, he said that “Dorothy had once complained that some people had told her that I was dating another lady whom I intend to marry and abandon her after these several years together.

But I reassured her that it was not true that people were only trying to destroy our relationship. It did not occur to me that she was still harbouring the grudge”, he said.

He said the morning the incident happened, they woke from bed without any sign of trouble and he led her on morning devotion. “It was when I was rounding off the prayers with my eyes still shut that she sneaked out and brought the paint rubber where she hid the acid and poured it on me.”

He said his girlfriend who is from Agwagwune in Biase area, Cross River State attacked him while he was not wearing a shirt, so that the acid would have maximum impact on his body.

After pouring the acid on me she said “if the God you are praying to supports your plan, I will now see the woman that will accept you withyour eyes blind and face destroyed’ and she ran away”.

Doctors at the UCTH confirmed that one of Edmund’s eyes had been completely destroyed while the second one could besalvaged.

“He needs a skin transplant and adequate care for the other eye to be restored at least for him to see with it and that cannot be done here but outside this country,perhaps in UK or USA”, PMNews source said.

DSP John Umoh, the Public Relations Officer for the Cross River Police Command said the woman has been arrested and is currently in detention.

FEDERAL UNIVERSITY, KASHERE GETS N3.5bn FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

Akko(Gombe) – The Federal Government has released a total ofN3.5 billion for development of infrastructure in the newly-established Federal University, Kashere, in Gombe State.

Prof. Kabir Farouk, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, announced this ata news conference in Kashere on Monday.

He said the first grant of N1.5 billion was used in providing two male and one female hostels, two faculty buildings, a student centre and academic and administrative offices.

Other facilities provided with the fund, he said, are science laboratory, classrooms, information, and communication centre, vehicles, works and physical planning building, a clinic and a library.

Farouk said the second grant of N2 billion, which was given through the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND), would be used in providing a befitting library, senate building, ICT centre and other faculty buildings.

He said the institution was committed to excellence and integrity in the pursuit of knowledge.

“The Federal University, Kashere, is an institution that is committed to excellence and integrity in the pursuit of knowledge within an environment that respects diversity,the worth of the individual and academic freedom.

It is also committed to service, learning and a shared responsibility for applying knowledge and skills, to address interrelated issues affecting local, national andglobal communities.’’

The vice chancellor said that in order to prepare a solid and befitting foundation for academic excellence, the university had invited teams of academics and experts from the U.S. for a service learning workshop for its academic staff.

“The workshop is intended to expose our academic staff to the global concepts of imparting knowledge to students, and to prepare their mind for global competition in the academic sphere,” he said.

Farouk said academic activities in the institution began on Monday with the registration of the 315 pioneer students admitted into the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science.

He said that students were admitted to study accounting, Business Administration, Economics and Development Studies, geography, history and Diplomatic Studies, Political Science, Sociology and Islamic studies.

OSHIOMHOLE DECLARES WINNER OF EDO STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

The Governor of Edo State , Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has been re-elected to pilot the affairs of the state in the next four years.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sunday, declared Mr Adams Oshiomhole of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as the winner of the Edo governorship election, held on Saturday.

The Returning Officer, Prof Osayuki Oshodi , who officially announced the result of the election at INEC headquarter in Benin, said Oshiomhole scored 477,478 votes to defeat five other candidates in the election.

Gov Adams Oshiomhole with his supporters after he was declared winner of the Edo governorship elections, Sunday, in Benin City.

Oshodi said Maj.-Gen.Charles Airhiavbere of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 144, 235 votes, while Chief Solomon Edebiri of All Nigeria Peoples Party scored 3,642 votes to come third.

He said Mr Roland Izeobuwe of Congress for Progressive Change came fourth with 2,793 votes and Mr Frank Ukonga of Social Democratic Movement Party followed with 807 votes.

Oshodi, who is the Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin, further announced that Mr Andrew Igwemoh of Labour Party scored 604 votes,while Mr Paul Orunmwese of National Conscience Party scored 540 votes in the contest.

He said that Oshiomhole, who is the incumbent, won in the 18 local government areas of the state and satisfied the requirements of the law to be declared winner of the contest.

“I, Prof Oshiodi asthe returning officer, hereby certify that I was the returning officer of the July 14 governorship election and hereby declare that Oshiomhole having satisfied the requirement of the law and having scored the highest number of votes cast is hereby declared winner,’’ Oshodi declared. UNN POST UTME LEAKAGE: 23YR OLD PRINTER ARRAIGNED IN ENUGU

Enugu — A 23- year old apprentice printer,Chukwuka Okereke, was yesterday arraigned before the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu for allegedly masterminding the leakage of the University of Nigeria Post-UME question papers which led to the cancellation of the examination recently.

Okereke, an apprentice with Cheston Agency Press Limited, Enugu was arraigned before Justice D. V. Agishi on a two count charge of conspiracy and examination malpractice.

He was arrested by the State Security Service, SSS, in Enugu about three weeks ago following a discreet investigation into the leakage which was described as a major embarrassment to the university.

A Principal Legal Officer from Enugu State Ministry of Justice, Mr. Anayo Edeh, alleged that the accused committed the offence on or before June 14, about five days to the examination.

Okereke was said to have conspired with one Godwin Chukwu, now at large, to commit examination malpractice contrary to section 10 (a) and (c) of Examination Malpractices Act.

The prosecution also alleged that Okereke at the same time and place, with intent to secure an unfair advantage for another person delivered to Godwin Chukwu a question paper intended to be used for post JAMB examination at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka which is contrary to section 1 (b) (2) (c) of the Examination Malpractices Act.
